Our Stories Podcast is pleased to share this episode with Dr. Sagar Lonial, Chief of the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Chief Medical Officer of Winship Cancer Institute, and Anne and Bernard Gray Family Chair in Cancer at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Lonial shares his childhood passion for science and discovery, which led him into medicine, where he learned the nuanced approach of attending compassionately to the needs of patients living with cancer. Inspired by those who mentored him in his early career, such as Dr. Bill Eley, Dr. Lonial describes the importance of taking time with patients and “looking them in eye,” and teaching trainees to do the same. With a drive for moving the organization forward in excellence, Dr. Lonial has learned over the past few years to make space for exploring joys outside of medicine, such as in reading historical texts, cooking, and even a trip up Mount Kilimanjaro with his son. Dr. Lonial speaks to the importance of living out his values in leadership through clearing away barriers for those with great visions who are making their own paths. Our Stories thanks Dr. Lonial for his leadership in paving the way for this wellness program, as well as the new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative in within HMO. Have a listen!
