Our Stories is pleased to present a conversation with Elise Hitron who is a Nurse Practitioner in the Phase I Clinical Trials Unit at Winship Cancer Institute. Ms. Hitron was exposed to health care as a child because her mother worked as a primary care doctor in Haiti. In Haiti Ms. Hitron first gained an appreciation for the value of teamwork in taking care of people as well as the need for volunteerism in communities. After graduating from Emory's Nurse Practitioner program, Ms Hitron started her career in medical oncology and then transitioned into clinical trials work given her interest in what medical science may be able to offer patients. To maintain her own wellness and banish any feelings of "languishing" during the pandemic, Ms. Hitron spends time outdoors with her husband and dog, and gets regular exercise biking to work occasionally or gardening. Reading and talking with people has been helpful to temper distress related to difficult national times with the pandemic and social justice movement this past year. Childhood lessons about the value of volunteerism have stayed with Ms. Hitron and she is pleased to work alongside nurses at the Urban Health and Wellness primary care clinic in Atlanta. https://uhwclinic.org/our-team.
